Music of Choice & Music of Chance - Jani Christou

Campus Hoogpoort, Hoogpoort 64, 9000 Ghent

This year the Contemporary Music Week of the Royal Conservatory of Ghent revolves around the Greek composer Jani Christou (°Heliopolis 1926, + Athens 1970). Curator Nikos Ioakeim is following Christou’s lead in two different directions. The quest for the ritual, the dramatic and the primeval instincts, which is related to the oeuvre of Christou’s good friend Giacinto Scelsi, will take a central position. Aside from that, his use of graphic notation, proportional notation and chance is the motive for a concert series which focuses on the New York School of the fifties and sixties, and its influence on the European field of music of that time.

The Greek overtones of this week are reaffirmed by 4 visiting young composers – Nikos Ioakeim, Michalis Paraskakis, Costis Zouliatis and Nikos Karydis.

The Contemporary Music Week contains the screening of a documentary, lectures, a panel discussion, an exhibition and six concerts, among which 2 world premieres, music theatre by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and works by Boulez, Brown, Cage, Feldman, Scelsi, Stockhausen and Christou.

Free admission.
